My 17 year old son was just sentenced to 13 years in prison. 



This is the tye of child who smiles and keeps pushing even through the worst possible things.  He was abused by his biological father several years ago and seems things have gone down hill from there.  But I think this is going to be a breaking point for him.  He was already showing signs of depression.


I was raised by an emotionally abusive parent and I did everything I could to try to ensure he never felt the things i felt.  When we talk all he speaks about is the pain he feels.


He is my only son. 


I go to counseling but I feel like my heart is literally broken


The very court that sentenced him I went to and begged for help in the beginning. No one knew of anything to do.


Is JAIL the only form of rehabilitiation we offer mentally ill children in the USA?

So sorry to hear of your pain and your son’s sentence. Our mental health system is not meeting the traumatic needs of so many of our children. Especially adolescents. I will be praying for him and for you. Keep advocating for him. Continue getting counseling and ignore you have a church that will totally support you and your son, be vulnerable with those you can trust. I have found such help in the Bible and Carol Kent’s books. www.carolkent.org

MyChild, I totally understand. I have been trying to find help for my son (who I adopted and is my only son) for years. Mental health help has been laughable. After the year from hell in 7th grade, his psychiatrist says, "Oh, let's try this drug. It'll help slow his mind down so he can make better decisions.' Where was this help/suggestion 2 years before that when issues had already started? And let's just do play therapy until they're an adult. Forget finding a good therapist that makes appointments after 5 pm.

And don't get me started about the schools. If they don't fit the 'going to college' good kid' mold...

My heart is broken, too. I'm glad you are able to go to counseling. I've found coming to this group and just crying when I read others stories help me, because I'm at the point where I simply can't voice what's going on inside of me. It just comes out as tears right now. And I really need to cry. At least at this point I can at least say he's in jail when I have had to talk to his doctors, etc.

Tears are cleansing! Our adopted children come with so much baggage that they need help unpacking. We tried to get help for our son so many times but he lied to all the counselors and therapists. Those he did dupe, he refused to go to. He has such a hard time being vulnerable and accepting help. He has even pushed God away who loves him more than we could ever imagine. Praying and believing for our children. Where there is breath, there is hope!
