One or more of our adult children walked out of our lives and never looked back.

One question I think is very important is, "At what stage did you decide to stop asking for contact"?

The book called Done with the Crying really helped me. I highly suggest it to any estranged parent.

Hi, I'm reading this book right now. Very helpful. I'm trying to find a support group near me where you go and meet and discuss estrangement with a mentally ill adult child. Wish I could find one. I want to start one and want to contact town members of our towns forum on FB. I'm ashamed though. Lots of people in town know us and I don't want to embarrass my other two sons. Catfish, find a mental health advocacy organization and go to the parent's support group. Might not be specifically for EC with mental illness but I bet it is fairly common. I am thinking NAMI in the USA.
