I'm the father of an incredible 10 yr old girl, who is the sweetest child on the face of this planet . . . when she's medicated. Otherwise, it is like we have a devil child living in our home. She was diagnosed several years ago, but due to medication side effects, we've had to change her meds from time to time.
Her current regimen has been very difficult on everyone. In fact, we just returned from a week in Cancun and all I can say is, it's good to be home. When her meds are just a little late, anything can happen, and I mean anything! She even drew blood on me for the first time this past week.
To make things worse, my wife and I approach her in very different ways. I am the "caregiver" and my wife tends to be the "disciplinarian", showing no compassion, caring or understanding about what our poor daughter is going through. My heart breaks when I see my daughter's eyes, knowing that she doesn't want to be like this, she just wants to be "normal".
Anyway, I didn't really address your concerns, but you need to know that you're not alone.
I agree with you about the friends issue as well. Since the kids play outside in the evening my son's meds have worn off. The kids will not play with him because he says weird things and acts very different from them. I have seen this and it breaks my heart. He has no friends in the neighborhood. I try to have his cousin over for a play date from time to time, or schedule play time in the park with a kid he knows. But most of the time he is not around any kids. So sad.
ADHD totally sucks. I try so hard everyday, and try to stay positive (like my screen name). I take classes with a therapist to learn positive reinforcement behavior techniques. But sometimes I am secretly jealous of other peoples' children. Especially the ones that are overall agreeable. But then I think of what other people are dealing with that I don't (very sick children) and I feel guilty for being jealous :) Totally a no win. And I worry about my son managing this horrible disibility for the rest of his life - college, a job, high school. I wish I could look forward to some of this, but I am so afraid for my son. ADHD does truly suck and I hate it.
Sorry for the late response - we went on vacation. It went much better this year thanks to medication I'm sure. Son seemed to have a little anxiety though. Previous years were a total nightmare, so this was an improvement.
