My sister in law just switched her son from Adderrall XR to Straterra about two weeks ago.Her son is sleeping better at night, but so far the Strattera is not having positive effects on his behavior at all, per her. Personally, I notice that my nephew is a little bit less "spacey" than he appeared to me to be while on the Adderrall, but he also seems less happy to me. His Mom thinks this is not a good med, at this point.

I think it does take time to build up in the system. As far as dangers of directly stopping-- those I have not heard of. It may take time for the drug to leave a person's system, but stopping it should not have any adverse affects on its own. I could be wrong about that, though.

As far as the liver problems are concerned, there have been very, very, very few liver problems on Straterra (far less than with Tylenol.) Not sure that makes you feel any better, but I thought I would offer it.

Straterra was originally developed as an anti-depressant-- and thus, it does carry the same risks of suicidal behavior as any anti-depressant does. My nephew has not demonstrated any of these behaviors-- thank goodness.

I should point out that my nephew is going to have his diagnosis of ADHD revisited. At this point, its looking like he also has Asperger's/ Autism. So it could be that his behavior is not entirely ADHD related -- and thus the medication may not be as effective.

With this in mind, I also have a friend who had a son on Straterra for many years-- she thought it really helped him, and he had no real side effects from it at all. She was happy with it.

i really don't have much info on straterra, other than I know my sister in law stopped giving it to my niece after she had 2 seizures... BUT, I'm not certain if it was verified that the medication was the cause of the seizures or not....

we use straterra and i love it. it has been a great addition to his life we went from cs and ds to as and bs. Quin sleeps well and we dont have the crash at night that we were having on all the other meds. All of these meds have side effects andyou do have to watch for them but im happy with i I hope that this will help

Thanks everyone. I guess it's like any other and I have to watch for any side effects. But the thing that worries me the build up in the system. The med he is on now, it starts working immediately and it's out of his system by day's end. I know Strattera is not like that.. how soon after he takes it would I notice anything undesirable? And if I do notice something and it's built up in his system, does that mean it takes awhile for that side effect to go away too?

My sister had her son on straterra for a while, during a period of time I was babysitting him while she went to work. He was already a difficult kid (and bigger than mine) given to irritability. He grew increasingly more aggressive while on it, even though he was more focused all the time. A few weeks into it, my sister took him off when I declared I could no longer look after him under it - after he attempted to kill my son for brushing up against him.
To this day she has not put him back on meds, although his schoolwork has suffered immensely.
