The therapists and psychologist said if my son had a heart condition, or a kidney problem would I take medication breaks?. They talked of suicide rates among teens and depression..
I was always so torn. When my son was 5 we took him off meds for 2 months and he was so out of control. The daycare refused to take him on field trips until I put him back on his meds. After that we never took him off again, he is 22.
He slept like a rock, he is about 40 pounds overweight so obviously he eats and he ended being about 5 foot 9 so not a bad height either. He graduated from college in the spring.
I don't know that medication is right for everyone, but my son was on it for 15 years with no breaks. Of course we also don't know the effects he might have in 20-30 years, but so far he is fine.
I will say it was a very hard decision many many times throughout the years. I sure wish you the best with whatever path you choose.
