This community is designed as an open forum where the parents and guardians of children with ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) can give and receive support, as well as discuss ideas, techniques, concerns, surprises, and challenges they may face with their children.
Well, tomorrow is the big day for my son and me.. We're taking the Medication Plunge.
We are starting with 10mg of Biphenin (We're in Canada.. I think it is closely related to Focalin in the U.S.). We have to start with a pill that can be opened up, since my son cannot swallow pills.
My boy is really excited about it. He hates school and struggles SO much. And he has been waiting for the day to try meds so that he can improve in school. He feels isolated and "stupid" most of the time, and just wants to be like the other kids.
... Which is all the more reason to embrace the meds, I know, but I am still SO SCARED of side effects! I decided to start on Easter weekend so that I would have four days at home with him to monitor him closely, but now I'm worried about what to do if he HAS some wierd reaction. I can't help but think of all the rare but dangerous side effects, and even just how he's going to react on them - how it's going to make him feel, etc. I'm trying to not let him see MY fear, but it's there and it's real. I'm going to be a wreck all weekend.
I'm sure (or at least I HOPE!) this is a normal reaction to the beginning of this process?!?

Just an idea...
my nephew didn't like taking pills, so my sister used to wrap them in a piece of a fruit roll-up... he took them fine that way.
Now he doesn't fight it at all (then again he's got other medical conditions and has about 6 pills each morning)

Today is Day 5, and thankfully no side effects to report. Today was his first school day on his meds, and his teachers reported that he was more focused in the morning, but he needed prompts to return to task by afternoon. He's only on a 10mg, and I spoke to his therapist this morning, and she recommended we try the 15 mg for next week and see how that goes. I'm starting to relax a little more now.. but I'm sure even as I increase doses, I'll be a mess all over again! lol.
