I don't know about you guys, but I am counting the days until school gets out. My son is in 7th grade and this time every year for the past 4 years has been the absolute worst behaviorwise. I get double the phone calls/emails and he gets double the punishment(recess and afterschool detentions, in-house suspensions, etc). It is so bad they are looking at shortening his day and excusing him from specials classes such as PE, Spanish, Art-which he already got kicked out of after a week. He has been in this school for 2 years and I think he's pretty much given up as he feels he can't catch a break and that everyone is watching him. I hate to say it, but I don't blame them, but I also understand where he is coming from. I am meeting with the other middle school in our area and his current team to discuss changing schools next year for 8th grade, give him a fresh start and see if that works.
My son is still doing well at home and I am taking an on-line parent training class that has a very good perspective on kids with severely bad behavior. The technique seems to work when applied properly. I still have a ways to go. He is refusing to go to therapy, so I have started seeing his therapist to help me deal with the issues. 2 sessions with him so far and I am learning a lot not only about my son but about myself. I felt so much better after the sessions and plan to continue going. How is everyone else doing?

hi have u tried any medication with him? i also did a parenting course that helped me alot x

Which parenting course did you take? Yes on the meds. He wasn't diagnosed until this past September. We started meds in October. He was on 4 different meds, 2 diff strenghs for each so 8 prescriptions in less than 6 months. None of them worked, I thought the focalin was working but after a while even after increasing it he was becoming more self destructive. I finally just pulled him off all meds in early March. I figure if he's behaving the same on the meds than he does off, there's no point in having him take it. I know the problem is school. We were able to get his behavior manageable at home with the help of a psychologist over a year ago, I just can't get it under control at school. His learning disabilities are a huge obstacle for him and he is very frustrated. I am beginning to think he doesn't even have ADHD. I plan to do more testing next year if he starts off on a bad foot at the new school. Right now I just need to get through the month of May! Thanks!

I wonder if it's the time of year because both my boys are getting crazy and it was like this last year as well. They go until the end of June although they don't do a heck of a lot the last couple of weeks. We are up in the air as to what will happen neck year, I am guessing it will be a new school. They have been working on getting him out of there since last year, they have him down to half a day now. He is only in grade 1 and I already don't know what to do. Last week his Dr. said he would contact the school as they have pushed for meds and then more meds but have never bothered to test him for learning disabilities. They think he just acts bad for no particular reason, when he isn't able to settle down he gets sent to "room 30" which is basically a closet with a spiderman chair. So far my son hasn't been offered any type of therapy, we just started seeing a new Dr. hopefully things will change.

LiannaMe- Are you still seeing the same doctor you went to last month or were you able to get another one? I think I remember you switching recently because the one you were with was promoted or somethign and you saw the new one and he wasn't much help. Just wondering if you are getting anywhere with it. Hang in there, it will all work out. I am looking forward to meeting with the new school administration in a couple of weeks. I hope my son understands and won't be too angry. We aren't going to tell him until this year ends as we fear if he knows he's not coming back all hell will break loose! My son has 7 or 8 teachers in middle school, most of them work with me and understand him but there are a few that believe he is misbehaving to make their life miserable. You'd think they would recognize that when they talk to him one on one outside of a class room, he is very respectful. It's just when he gets overwhelmed or frustrated when in class when he loses it. Keep pushing to get the tests for learning disabilities.

Yes we saw him for the second time, at least this time my son responded to him a bit more. I am hoping that we at least get started with something before school is out. Our teachers are going on strike Thursday is a one day walk out but who knows where it will go from there. Even something like this is hard for him- now he thinks HE can go on strike! Oye this guy of mine :)

Well I hope the new guy works out for you. My son just dropped another F Bomb on his Science teacher today, so he'll probably get a one day suspension for that, maybe 2 since it's the second time he has done it in the last month. I guess that will show him! NOT! I am requesting they put him in In School suspension so he doesn't fall further behind. I am above the top of my stress level today. I just don't know how to help him at school, it's frustrating.
