Trust me you are fine! We all lose our minds once in a while, if you can walk away...or have someone relieve you so you can gather yourself. I have lost my temper plenty of times and always felt bad, but i just try harder next time. The biggest thing is help, get someone a friend, parent, or your husband to take over!!!!!!!! Take a break!!! That is my BIG advice. We just need LOTS of patience, it does take time! Hang in there.

I have a 13 year old son who really knows how to push my buttons. What I read about in the advice articles is that we should try to keep our temper, even when they are loosing theirs. Make clear and consistent rules/expectations, stick with them, have clear consequences, and try not to say too much. Kids stop listening after the first few words, so the less we say the better. Even if its just one word like 'bed' 'shoes' etc... Even if you can just point to something, like when they forget to hang up their coat or something, just point at it, they'll get the message. Try not to get caught up in their bad mood, stay as calm as you can and know you are doing a great job. Good luck!

I had a rough night...2.5 hours doing 2 short pages of math with my 2nd grade son. Simple simple math. I lost my temper. So did he. It happens.
My husband and I tag teamed it and I left the room to lay down for a bit.
Then, I had a beer.

My son is now 12. He was diagnosed with ADHD with impulse control disorder when he was 5. I didn't want to put him on meds so we tried the diet changes and that is helpful. We also tried behavior modification and that was also helpful. We ended up putting him on meds with the rational that if he was sick, we would give him medication. He didn't want to take it, but knew he had to. We explained that his brain works SO much faster than the average persons and that we had to slow it down so he could understand what was being said and let his brain process it. We told him that after he had been on the meds for awhile, we would look at taking him off of them, but he had to show that he could control himself. Later, he was diagnosed with anxiety issues and that he has more anxiety than he does ADHD. The med we put him on works on both. He is doing great, makes the A/B honor roll and has missed 2 days of school in 3 years. The point I am making is that if he wants to be treated a certain way by others, he must first take ownership of it. He has NEVER used ADHD as an excuse for a poor choice. He knows he made a poor choice. My younger son is also ADHD and deaf in one ear. He knows, neither is an acceptable excuse for not doing his best. I hope this helps and apologize for being so wordy.

It's not easy. I now know how sensitive he is to a raised voice and I try to keep that in mind. Sometimes, when he is mimicking me, I just walk away and leave it til i cool down. He always knows how to push the buttons. They are smart and love a good show, I have conversations in my head to remind myself that I am the adult and in control. Try to take time for yourself as well. Have a night out with the girls and remember that there are other things in life to enjoy. Don't beat yourself up if you lose your temper. It happens as no one is perfect. I do apologize if i am in the wrong, but I wait til he is receptive to it and we are both calm.

When my son starts to mimic me, I start singing everything I say. Yep. I pretend that I'm in a musical. He doesn't like singing, so he stops or he starts a giggling fit. Also when I find myself getting angry at either of my kids (only one has ADHD) I'll tell them that they have made me angry and then do something silly to let the anger go. I have used the water sprayer at the sink and squirted them. I have chased them around the house and tickle them when I catch them. I'll put on oldies on the radio and dance crazy. After we are all exhausted I explain to them what they did to make me angry, what they should have done instead, and why it is important to let the anger go.

The way I see it, how can I teach either of them to not blow up when they are angry if I don't practice what I preach. I have significantly less silly moments now than I had a year ago.
