I would like to make a comment about the homework times that are talked about in several postings. My son is now 17 years old. When he was between the age of 8 and 13 we pushed our son very much on getting the homework done. We did not know until around the age of 12 that he might have ADHD. In hindsight, I wish my husband and I would have backed off of the pressures that we put on about homework at this age range. When our son was around 12 we had him tested, started going to counseling and got an IEP for our son. If I had any advice for others, I would say if you can get the IEP for your children, do it. You can have things written in the IEP that will help with the homework and "take it out of your home ballpark". My husband and I feel we damaged our relationship a little with our son as far as getting along with him because of how we pushed on the homework. I would advise other parents to try to take yourselves out of the mix of homework and get other people to help. We had our son in boys and girls club after school, so we had them help him. Because of the IEP we were able to get him in a special lab time at school that would allow someone to help him with homework. This made our relationship with our son at home the difference between night and day. My husband and I felt really guilty af first when we were being advised to back off of the homework with him. We felt like we weren't doing our duty as a parent. But again, in hindsight, I wish we would have backed off the homework sooner. Now my son is in the 11th grade. He still struggles with getting his work done and still has an IEP and gets special help at school. We DO NOT try to force him to do anything at home with homework. We say to him that we are there to help him, we will buy supplies or give him computer time if he needs it. So he knows that we're there but we're not going to push. I go to an ADHD parent group that meets once a month in my hometown. I hear the parents of younger children always talk about how frustrating homework is, how the there are tears every night, stress, etc. I remember those days and try to tell my story about looking back and seeing how we handled things and how things are so much better now. As your children get older, they will have to start answering for their work whether they are doing it or not. Our son was choosing not to do his work. We let him take the consequences at school with grades and teachers. This was hard to sit back and do but as soon as we let it go and let him deal with other people, he began to see that he needed to do his work and that we weren't the only ones that were telling him this. Okay, I'll stop going on and on for now. But I just felt I had to chime in here and say this.
