Unfortunately though, they haven't for me, and like yourself, I struggled with the idea of putting my son on meds for two years (a year before his official diagnosis, when I had suspicions, and a year after his diagnosis as well). During that time, I tried every strategy and alternative out there. In our case, some worked, some didn't at all, and those that worked didn't work enough. My final decision to put him on medications was a very depressing day for me, but when it came down to it, NOT putting him on them would've had much more serious consequences than PUTTING him on them. Even though I agree that more people need to be more supportive and understanding of ADHD, as a parent, I realized that my son was so impulsive that it was dangerous to his health and well-being at times, and he was so unfocused that he was failing miserably at school and couldn't focus like a normal child, in spite of ALL the accommodations and modifications in place for him at school. Also, my son even ASKED me why he can't just be like a normal child... which broke my heart literally in two. I owed it to him to try the meds, and I'm happy to report that all the side effects have gone now, and my son is doing much better in school - he's not impulsive, thinks before he does things, is getting better grades, and his self esteem has gone WAY up.
Like probably all parents, if I could get these results without medication, of course I would do it. But I can't. And this is helping my son function and enjoy life. :)
