My son went through a simular experience with a bully last week. For the last month he's been bullied by two different kids, mostly just dumb name calling such as shorty. The worst up in till last week was that one of the bullies through a rolled up ball of paper at my sons head. As a mother, I just wanted to march right down to the school and take care of it right then and there but I thought it would be best for my son to handle the situation on his own since he is now in Jr. High. I told my son that he can either tell the teacher (that often backfires on the vicims of bullies), he can stand up to these kids, or he can just ignore it and they would probably stop.
Well last week it went too far. One of the bullies thought he had all the right to give my son nipple twisters. My son kept telling him to stop but he continued and even put his hand down my sons shirt and pinched him hard. Well, my son thought that he had to take care of this bully in his own way so he gave a much taller than he is 6th grader $3.00 to go and push the boy and tell him to leave my son alone. Well, my son got into trouble for this and got suspended for one day. I was furious that this happened to my son. I asked him why he paid a kid and he said he didn't know what else to do at the time. He felt that if he didn't do anything about it, the student would continue to do this to him which by the way was in front of other students and very embarrasing to my son. He said he just wanted to run home and never return to this school again. My husband and I both went to the school to discuss it with my son's counceler. He assured me that the bully was going to be punished far worst than my son.
I thought about it all weekend long and became really angry on how the school handled this situation. I thought had it been a female student, they may have handled it differntly but it shouldn't matter, to me it was still an assult and this bully had went too far. I sent the counceler an email this morning letting him know I want to discuss this further with him as well as the Vice Principle and Principle. I just want to make sure that they fully understand the seriousness of the situation. To make matters worst, I found out from my son that the bully was back as school today which mean he too only got a 1 day suspension. Hopefully something good comes out of this.
As for my son, he has two parents who love him very much. I assured him that he did nothing wrong and he did not deserve this. I also let him know that paying another kid to go push another was wrong (but secretly I was glad he did that).
I think the schools need to have more assembles on school yard bullies as well as harsher punishment.
