Parents of Children with ADHD Support Group
This community is designed as an open forum where the parents and guardians of children with ADHD (Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) can give and receive support, as well as discuss ideas, techniques, concerns, surprises, and challenges they may face with their children.
As I write this, I can't stop the tears from flowing. It's just not fair that things have to be so hard for our kids.
I feel so hopeless sometimes. I don't expect things to be great all the time. My son is on meds and has come a long way since he's been on them, and I expect to still have bad days. But I just can't help feeling so down sometimes when I think that he'll always suffer with this. He's always going to have difficulties and we're always going to have way more stress than we should have. It just doesn't seem fair.
My son has been doing quite well in school last year and so far this year. His accommodating teachers have had a lot to do with that. This year, his teacher left on medical leave early into the year, so they've been bouncing teachers around since then, which is hard on any child, especially one with ADHD, who thrives on routine. We just recently had a replacement teacher confirmed, and she's horrible. She's a much older lady who doesn't even believe ADHD is an actual thing, and she thinks he should 'just be able to do the things every other child can do'. He hates her, and is refusing to do work in her class, so it's all coming home for homework now. We spend 5 hours doing homework tonight, and he's failing tests now, compared to A's and B's earlier in the year. :(
I'm trying to explain to my son that there will be teachers and situations in life that he's not happy with, but we have to find ways to deal with that. But the reality is that he'll always struggle with that. And that sucks. It's always going to be hard and there's always going to be not enough time and too much stress. I hate this hopeless feeling. :(

My advice? Be proactive and go speak with the principal about the situation. I wish now that I had pushed the school more to do something about what was going on. He went from loving school to now continuing to hate it even though he's got a great teacher this year! It saddens me that he doesn't like school and complains about having to go.
Try to see if you can work with the school and come up with some things to help make this a better school year for your son! Best of luck to you and your son!!
