after long months of discussion, we want our son to repeat 7th grade and i am a nervous wreck about it. he is finally doing well. after a horrible 5th grade, we medicated him in 6th and his life turned around. he still though was lacking a little socially because i think it took him a long time to come out of his stereotype of annoyances that he had before his meds. his grades also went up and he is doing great in 7th grade. but this is the thing. he is still way younger, a summer baby, very very small, and much more immature than the others, he makes friends because he is a great athlete, and a nice kid, but we want to switch him to a private school and hold him back,, he seems on board, he visited and was happy not to be the youngest and smallest, but he is terrified. the problem is once i do this, i cannot go back. i really want him to have an edge for once, everything was always hard for him, and my other kids are older and i see how much easier things are for him. i feel like he can finally start over being older and his friends hopefully will still be his friends when he leaves. am i wrong. i really dont want to be wrong.

Wow, that's a tough one. I'm not sure if holding him back because of his size is a good idea but if he struggles in class or is lacking in maturity then I would agree. You and your husband know what's best for him so go with your instincts. At least your son is on board with the idea. We too are transferring our son to a private school next year. We are hoping this will turn him around at school. Our son approached us and asked if he could go to this school. We were very surprised and had never considered private school. We weighed the options and decided it was worth a try since what we've done up until now hasn't been working out very well. I think its our job as parents to keep trying until we find something that works. Good luck.

I think it's a great idea to hold him back, and you should be proud of yourself for being willing to consider it! If your son is on board, and if he's switching schools (which means it won't be obvious to his friends that he is repeating a grade), this sounds like a perfect way to address a maturity situation. Not every kid is ready for a certain grade in school just because they are at a certain age, and our current school system approach does not really allow for flexibility with that until our kids fail and are publicly humiliated with the school and their peers. You are taking a great opportunity to reset the clock for your son and put him in a more supportive environment where he can succeed. Don't second guess yourself - you're doing great! :)
