Hi all! I know what I'm about to ask is kinda weird but I haven't been having any luck finding the answer I'm looking for so I thought I'd ask everywhere.

Here goes: I'm working on a, nearly completed, Parent Awareness & Education Program at our local middle and private elementary schools and I need a few statistics. Part of the program involves a parent participatory demo and I want to make sure the stats are correct. Anyway, the demo involves having a % of parents (who represent the kids) who experiment with drugs/alcohol - stand. I have that % but I don't have it for the ones who abuse/misuse OR the ones who cross the line of addiction. I need those % separately - not together! The SAMSHA site clumps those two together but that won't work for the sake of my demo. Obviously - addicts do abuse BUT there are ones who misuse and abuse who are not addicted.

Just thought I'd throw it out there to see if anyone might want to try and see what they can find.

I would love to help you because I think is something that needs to be done and sooner than later.. My concern is that you seem to think that some can use and abuse drugs but they are not addicts. I think I would have to argue that statement, unless you are speaking about pot and alcohol. All other drugs if used for a week say, the user is an addict. Why do you think there sre some that aren;t addicts? All users of drugs are addicts in my books. I am very interested in this program.

Pot and alcohol are drugs and I do clarify that. I know of many who abused but didn't cross the line into addiction. They knew, at one point, they had to stop. Case in point - my son's best friend used to party with my son all the time and got just as drunk or high as my son on a pretty regular basis. I had access to their instant messages (without the knowledge of my son) so I know how much they did together. Getting high or drunk was all they talked about. His friend, however, as much as he partied did not become addicted. He told my son, on-line, that he had concerns about him and that he should consider stopping for awhile. My son told him he couldn't. He said he's tried. This the conversation I printed out and gave to a drug counselor (part of his assessment because he refused to go back to finish it). In addition - I have two very good friends who are drug counselors and I showed them my program and they did not dispute that. Yes - teens do abuse but that doesn't mean they are all addicts.

Thank you mgs - I have already looked at that but no stats. I did, however, (just now) re-read it and copied and printed it out. It will help my program.

lyndylou - you might want to read that site. It explains, better than me, the difference.
