My daughter will be 21 in a week from now. Over the past six months she has been in four different rehabs, suspended from her dream college, and continues to use and make poor choices. I know that everyone says detach, but my heart is so broken that I can not stop crying.

I to can feel your pain. Everyone tells me the same, walk away , don't get involved. My son is 37 and has his own son, how do I walk from him now.

It's so hard to detach absolutely. But your lives become so entangled and for myself any support I gave my son allowed him means and ways to use his time to find drugs. They become very manipulative from this disease. They break us if we let them. I've the same heartache you do. I've strengthened my boundaries and hope and pray my son seeks recovery. We cannot make that choice only they can. I hope both of our children find the will. Try finding an Alanon group as we definitely need support for ourselves also. You are not alone with your feelings and it helps to know this. Take care and I wish the best for you and your daughter. xo

I feel your pain. It's heartbreaking seeing our kids caught in this disease of addiction. My son, 33 has lost everything he acquired and was homeless for 2 years after I set the boundary. It was very hard to do but we become so codependent its hard to have a normal relationship at all. He is now off the streets, barely living in a men's residence (Salavation Army charity) but it's a start. I continue to keep my boundaries and I pray for him daily. You are not alone.

Your broken heart may not heal for a long time. That is the sad truth. However it took me too long to realize that It was my fear of losing whatever relationship I still had with my son that was keeping me from doing what was best for him. That was cutting him off. When he had no home from which to operate going to rehab was more appealing. When he had no home to come back to working the program and going to a halfway house was not so awful. It’s so hard, but the sooner your daughter realizes that all you are willing to give her is your love and emotional support the sooner she will realize how huge those gifts are and that it is her responsibility to figure out the rest. Be strong. Find support for yourself because you will and do need it. All the best
