When my son was in rehab there was a great family program. They did a wonderful job of explaining what addiction does to the brain. Essentially, it has them living in their "lizard brain", where they are in fight or flight mode. They aren't using the part of their brains that allow for thinking of consequences or right and wrong or long-term planning. It's all about how to get the next fix and doing whatever it takes to get it.

That's why so many of the family members of addicts talk about their addicts doing things like stealing or pawning jewelry or driving drunk. It's almost as if they all become the same person. I picture it like the addiction being a jailer and I'm fighting the jailer while my son is locked away trying to get out. The jailer just happens to look exactly like my son, but it's not really him.

Naranon is a great program for family or friends of addicts. Also with zoom meetings it's very easy to attend. You can just listen too, as there are no expectations.
