I recently went to "my" Al Anon meeting (I love this particular group - my home meeting place) and the last one was so wonderful ~ I just had to share:
One of our members is ~ what can I say ~ is the nearest "thing" to an angel you can imagine. Her son is in jail ~ in the medical ward ~ in a bad way. He's very sick. About a week ago her son wanted help so badly that he broke a building window and waited for the police to haul him off. All along this angel of a mother made sure that her son knew he was/is loved very deeply. He's a heroin addict, in his late 20's, and has been through numerous treatment centers and once in jail, and until recently~ he was on the streets. He always knew, however, that he could call his mom and she would meet him somewhere and bring him lunch, comfort, and prayers. They have a wonderful relationship. She is very spiritual in a very kind and loving way. You can't help but love her. She is humble and great example to others, especially to the members, who harbor so much anger toward their addicts. She told me that her loving response to her son has helped her so much too. She is no longer upset with him and really knows how to separate her son from the disease.
My new and now dear friend told our group that she visited her son in the medical ward at the prison the other day and she said he looked so sick it shocked her. She said he still had the need to tell her how sorry he was for breaking the window! He heard it was expensive. Breaks my heart. It also breaks my heart that others don't see that ~ that addicts (most of them anyway) do have guilt, remorse, and shame. Do you know what this mom told her son? She told him not to focus on the negative but to focus on the things he's to be grateful for. Like to be grateful for the nurse that's taking care of him and all the other blessings in his life. Wow. She told us that she is very grateful to God that her son is in jail. She knows that her son is in God hands.
I wanted to share this because I thought it might be a great reminder to us that our addict kids really need to hear how much we love them. We hate the disease......... but we love them. And maybe some of us think it's assumed that our children know that but it may not always come across that way?

thanks for sharing that,,,, I also always try to look at the bright side of things,, it's helped me get through some pretty tough times,,,, God has a plan for all of us,,, my daughter who is a herion addict, been to rehap twice, and is now sitting in jail for the second time, is sitting there because God put her there,,, God loves our children more then we do,,,,, I went and visited her ot n monday, I will not bail her out, she does have to held accountable for her actions,,, hoping this time around, she might heal herself,,,, addicition is a disease,,, honestly these kids did not wake up one day and decide to pop pills, or shoot up herion,,, of course they had a free will, and made horrible choices,,,,,,, has we sat there looking at each other,,, we did not talk about what she did,,, we talked about what she can do,,, and that I love her so much, that i surrender her to God,,, she will always be part of our lives,,, however I can no longer be part of her drug world,,,,,if you think about it,,, it took the Isrealites 40years to get out of the wilderness,,,, patience, endurance and believe, my daughter will get there
