Parenting With Mental Illness Community Group
This group is for parents that struggle with all types of mental illness.

What and how have you told your kids about your condition, if they're younger? How much do you think they've figured out on their own by your behavior/actions? If they're older, did they notice it growing up? Is it something that they gathered on their own or did you tell them? How old were they?
I struggle with what to say to my 6 year old when he asks why I'm crying or why I broke my favorite coffee mug. Last time I told him sometimes mommy does things she doesnt understand. And I've told him my medicine is for the way my brain works. I dont want to tell him things he doesnt understand or make him think I'm "crazy and unpredictable" or that any of it has something to do with him and his sister, but I dont want him to grow up and wonder why i never told him. Especially since things like this are sometimes genetic, they may struggle with something similar someday and I want them to know they can come to me. I dont want to just dump it on them someday as an adult either.
Any ideas?

I haven't written in my diary on my computer since May because I thought that my computer was dying. I got away from writing but my computer is hanging in there. I think that I will start writing in it again. It's so therapeutic.

First, I hope everyone is doing well, and continuing to fight that good fight! Keep up the great work on yourselves; I'm rooting for all of you!So, I started doing therapy at the beginning of the year, when I was in my most depressed state, but with my therapist, I made big changes and steps in the right direction. But, over a month ago, she couldn't take my insurance anymore, and I had to stop...
I was open enough with my eldest son (now 38) that my bff slapped me upside the head and yelled, "Quit using that child as a therapist! A 12 year old isn't ready for that much detail!" A courageous woman, my bff. . . Not too many people in this world are bold and/or caring enough to slap this beaten crazy bitch wolf upside the head. I kinda wish she would have slapped me upside the head earlier. I believe I did a great deal of damage with the verbal diarrhea.
I shot for a simpler honesty with my other son (now 34) but believe I still gave him more information than a child is ready to understand.
With my grandchildren, (2 and 4) I rarely offer explanations and shoot to keep any and all explanations to 5 words or less when they ask. Of course, the more limited exposure makes it easier with my grandchildren.
"Gammy's sad."
"I lost my temper. My bad."
But, at the end of the day, all we can do is take our best guess and pray we guessed well and/or are able to clean up the messes attached to bad guesses. It sure helps to have a good support network to help with the sorting and puzzling.
Continued support while you sort, Kitty. I'm glad you are asking these important questions.
