When I first read your question I had never heard of YAOI. And I thought the letters in it probably stand for Young Adult something. So wondering what the O and the I were for I googled it. I ended up with wikipedia and the urban dictionary.
So for anyone who doesn't know what it is:
From wikipedia: "Yaoi also known as Boys' Love, is a Japanese popular term for female-oriented fictional media that focus on homoerotic or homoromantic male relationships, usually created by female authors. Originally referring to a specific type of djinshi (self-published works) parody of mainstream anime and manga works, yaoi came to be used as a generic term for female-oriented manga, anime, dating sims, novels and djinshi featuring idealized homosexual male relationships. The main characters in yaoi usually conform to the formula of the seme (, lit. "attacker") who pursues the uke (, lit. "receiver")".
(Wikipedia had a lot more to say, and among other things includes a section on the prevalence and acceptability of rape in YAOI.)
And from the urban dictionary: "Yaoi is a Japanese word, which is actually something of an acronym. It comes from "YAma nashi, Ochi nashi, Imi nashi", which means "no climax, no point, no meaning"."
"It's a slang term used to refer to stories that focus on homosexual relationships, usually between men. Yaoi tends to involve graphic sex, often with little or no plot. The female equivalent is yuri."
I don't know how accurate wikipedia and the urban dictionary are. But if the terms "graphic sex" and (any kind of)"eroticism" are accurate then I wouldn't want my tween (or even a teen if I had one) reading that.
Good luck.
I understand the curiousity. I would probably read it myself to have a discussion about why it is inappropriate for her age. I would also talk to her friends' moms to see if others are reading it, whether they are aware and their own feelings. A difficult conversation, I know particularly if values are not shared.
