More often the cause of these vomiting/diarrhea (not sure if your son currently has) episodes is by a virus where antibiotics will provide no relief.
If the symptoms are persisting, including the diarrhea, stool studies are sometimes obtained which can identify certain bacteria (which can come from food poisoning among other things) and an occasional virus.
But the usual course of a gastroenteritis (which is the vomiting/diarrhea we talk about with a "stomach" bug) involves vomiting for about 1-2 days, which then resolves but the diarrhea can continue for quite some time. The most important thing to follow during these illnesses is the hydration status.
Hope this helps,
Dr. J
I'm just nervous about what I found out on the internet. I'm going to get his ER papers to see what was done during histime there. I was left confused on what they did more than what they said.
