Here is the short version of a very long story. My 18.5 month old has been struggling with gross motor skills all along. He did not pull to stand until 14 months, crawl until 15 months and is still not walking independenly. He is getting PT and making SLOW progress. Everything else seems so be fine such as cognitive and social skills. He has been diagnosed with low muscle tone yet no one seems to know why. He was referred to a neurologist who said that he is not sure why he has the low muscle tone unless we do an MRI. My son would have to be sedated for that. This really scares me. The neuorlogist said we had two options, wait 6 months and see what happens or do the MRI now. What do you think that you would do if it were your child? I feel like on the one hand, I would like to know if something is wrong so we can really work on the problem now, but what is its just low muscle tone with no real cause... I don't want to sedate him for no reason. I am very confused right now.

I guess I would do it now, for two reasons: first, he's still young enough that he won't remember much, if any, of it. The older he gets, the more he will be aware and remember. Second, the sooner something (if there is something there) is discovered, the sooner it can be addressed and the better chance he will have to catch up. Oh, and third, the sooner you can stop worrying about him so much :)

You have to do what you feel you need to do...I can tell you what I did. We had 2 MRI's 6 months apart. My son was 6 months for the first one and 12 months for the 2nd. He had to be sedated for both and it sucked to watch it...but its what we had to do to get the answers we needed. He woke up completely fine from it...a little groggy but it wears off pretty quickly. He has to have a 3rd one in Jan or Feb...Im not happy about it but its the only way for us. He will be about 16-17 months old for that one. My son was being tested for Hydrocephalus...so thats why we had to do the MRI. If the Neuro isnt pushing it and you are really unsure then maybe wait. Our neurosurgeon said it was the only way for us to know for sure. Your son is hitting his milestones..even if it is slowly...he is at least doing it. Maybe a little more time is what he needs. I wasnt much help here.....Im sorry

On the other side...it can give you peace of mind...which is worth a LOT. Sorry Im rambling!!

my daugther had to have an MRI when she was 3 days old. I was really upset about it and refused to let them sedate her since she was so small. I just made sure she had a full belly before hand and a fresh diaper. Do what u feel is best and best of luck

When they are less then 6 months you have a better chance of them sleeping through it. My neurosurgeon wanted us to basically starve him and let him cry until he was so tired he passed out. Well, he ended up falling asleep right before he was due to have the MRI done. The nurse really wanted to try and get him through it with no sedation. Well they strapped him down and slid him back and he stayed asleep and then that machine went off and it was LOUD LOUD LOUD...he woke up hysterical crying screaming his head off. He ended up having to be sedated anyway.
