I would talk to him now about what he wants to do with his life. If he is interested in military go to a recruiter office and talk to them. Be honest about the arrest. Often they can get that dropped if he signs up. But these days the military is getting picky. Does your son want to go to college or a vocational school? Any interest there?
I've found that being honest with myself helps. Kids their age do drink or smoke pot or do other drugs. When we were their age we were drinking legally. And drugs I think were worse than they are today. So I don't condone the behavior but I am honest with myself and know that it will happen. The only thing you can do is encourage him to find a career and get busy.
