@ step sons at home Almost 17 and almost 18. Having trouble with the almost 18 year old. 2 years ago his half brother moved out of our home.....very angry and yelling "That's it I'm tired of this crap I"m gone".....well now.......it happened again with my almost 18 year old last sunday weekend. Yelled "I'm done.........I'm outta here......packed up his crap and left. However he did come right back home not too long after that BUT this past week has been hell on me. The argument was over him wanting to get 2 lip piercings and I had said I would be pissed off if he got it done b4 his co op was finished because he didn't know if he could wear it at his co op. He is working in a kitchen. I apologized up and down because I could have handled it WAYYY better..........I should have just let his co op handle it and shut my mouth but the damage is done.
Now we are left with this kid at home who actually is never at home, is always OUT at his new girlfriends place who is not even quite 15 years old yet and he's almost 18 (YES WE WARNED HIM THAT SHE IS VERY YOUNG AND TO BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL) but we can't control his life either.............and that is the main problem I'm sure is he's always feeling like he's being controlled.
I'm torn because I feel now that we've totally lost him, hardly ever see him and....................I'm just HOPING and PRAYING that this is just an adolescent phase he is going through. I MYSELF HAVE FEARS OF REJECTION..........and when people threaten to leave me it HURTS a great deal. We are still able to give each other hugs goodnight or goodbye but ...............I think he's only doing that for the sake of his father and to keep peace in the family.
I would love any suggestions or help please and thank you. I'm tired of this Cookie getting burnt!!!!

Wow, it really seems like you are at the end of your rope! He is definitely pushing all of your buttons. Because he is almost 18 he feels like he is an adult. My daughter has attempted to push the "adult" issue. Personally I feel that while they are living under your roof, they need to follow your rules. Does your husband have any input, or play any part of disciplining your 18 year old son? How does your husband respond when the son explodes? Having your husband's support is important. Your son needs to see that your husband has your back, and will not side with him. What is the co op for? If it is a continuation program, they may offer some form of support group, or counseling group that he, or the three of you could attend together? Good luck! I know "almost 18" is tough!

Oh my goodness...that is a tough situation. What is it with kids and piercings these days??? I read a really good article on parenting and it said to establish rules and try to enforce them even if your child breaks them constantly. I guess what it was saying was that you can be a constant in your child's life without going out and handcuffing them and bringing them home every night at curfew. He can know that the rules are there, and are established...just like in society...and still choose to break them. Consequences are tough, I know. You don't have the range of consequences for an 18-year-old that you do for a 10-year-old. I just thought the whole idea of the rules being there regardless of the child's behavior was really important because we all struggle for control and stability with these crazy teen-agers of ours... but we can still offer a stable home system that they know and can rely on. Good luck! I know everything is crazy..but I hope all of us can come out on the other side!

I think you just told my story, to a point. My son is almost 16 and hasn't left yet, but I tend to worry about things that are either petty or out of my control. I can also handle things WAY better than I often do. He has gotten to the point where he doesn't talk to me at all except for "When is dinner?" and "Can I go out?"
