How do I get my son to listen

My son is suppose to be a senior this year in high school but unfortunately he didn't pass all his credits to be classified as one. I have told him to ask his teachers for help and if he is having problems get a tutor or study with a friend in his class that makes good grades. He just says don't worry I can do this I will pass and be a senior. I have thought about him walking across the stage and thinking well my hard work and talking finally paid off but, I feel he doesn't listen and really could care less. He will be out on his own after this year and I am afraid that if he doesn't pass and his friends graduate that will crush him. I really don't want to see that. what am I suppose to do a worried mother.

My son is still in Junior high so I don't know if it is the same but they are doing summer school for the kids that didn't pass classes. That way they can join their friends and classmates when school starts in the fall. Maybe check that out and see if it is available.

I know I had to ride my son like no tomorrow to get him to do the homework and turn it in. He just didn't care. Surprisingly, he made the honor society but it wasn't without full on nagging and fighting to get there.

Hang in there. I think life is so tough for those that don't graduate high school....and the GED is no joke. Way harder than going to class and doing the homework.

I had the same problem with my son last year when he was about to be a rising senior. At the end of his junior year, he failed Algebra 2 and Spanish 2 in the second semester. He, then, went to summer school and still failed both classes. My husband and I didnt know what to do. Then, we decided to change his graduation track to make the bar easier for him to reach. Don't know if that is the best idea for all kids, but it is what we felt had to be done for our son to graduate. In most high schools there are 3 tracks. There is a 4 year university track - for students wanting to continue education at a 4 year college, a high technology/engineering track for students wanting to continue education a 4 year engineering school, and technical track for students wanting to continue education at a 2 year technical school. Check those our with the guidance counselor at his school.

Why don't you set up a meeting with his guidance counselor, you and him? Or with the teachers in question too? Or maybe you have done that....

If you wait for him to contact all his teachers and get an action plan in place it might never happen.

I understand completely. My son barely made it to senior year and they only allowed him to do it with squeezing in extra classes- it led to him dropping out. I wish I sent him to Huntington's or another learning center to help him. Please look into something like that it will make a world of difference.
