I need advice

My 17 yo sons dad wants to take him to a concert a couple hours away from where we live... The problem is that dad is a drug addict and I am scared to death that he will not be able to spend that much time with my son without using. He has somebody else that is going to drive because he does not have a valid license, I use to know the guy years and years ago but I have know idea what he is like today. im scared for my sons safety and am not sure what I should do. Part of me is betting that he won't even follow through, so I am trying not to get too worked up but it's hard. I did tell my son if he went and did not feel comfortable riding home with them to call us and we will hop in the car and go get him, but it would take 2 hours. My sister and her boyfriend are going to try to get tickets to the same show and I may even make him ride with them and meet up with dad at the show. Anybody have any advice for this?

Personally,I'd say no.I just would worry too much about the dad using.I hope it turns out ok for you both..

Wow, it must be intensely difficult to be in your shoes, I hope some Easter grace for your son and you.

If the junkie was not your sons father, it would be a simple no.

Does your son know that his father has the addition gorilla on his back?
The guy that will drive is a decades long friend of a junkie, that doesn't signal non drug use.

If there is any reason to think that the driver guy is a user, then I don't think you can let him drive your son

My fear if I say no is that he will take off with his dad anyway. I know that the police wont make him come home because of his age, I have called local authorities before to see what I could do in the event that he took off to live with his dad or I thought dad was driving intoxicated and they basically told me that there was not much I could do because of my sons age and that was when he was 15. They won't go looking for him because I think he is high. This is sooo hard. Hopefully he does not follow through, that is pretty much his pattern to make big promises and not come through. My son doesn't realize though that his dad did not come through most of the times because I made excuses so his feelings didn't get hurt.
