He is leaving for college out of state this Fall. I fear for him but at this point, I can't control his choices. This is where his upbringing and values come into play. Hopefully he will stay on the straight and narrow and be successful in college.
Your daughter is wrong that everyone is getting drunk. Maybe in the circle she is hanging out in but not everyone. Did she drive after drinking? That is a very scary choice. I think kids need us even more now then when they were toddlers. It is just in a different way. We need to be more of a loving consultant then in control. It is part of them growing up and learning to make good choices.
I would suggest that the reason she was so defensive is because she knows it is wrong. You don't have to respond to everything, but drinking and driving can be deadly.
It might also be a good idea to try and introduce her to some other peers, who aren't drinking - after all at 18 it is still illegal and if she is arrested it could jeapordize going to college or any finanical aid she has.
Good Luck.
