Parenting Newborns & Infants (0-1) Support Group
Feeding your infant and ensuring they are getting enough nutrition is one of the most important aspects of parenting during that first year. This community is dedicated to those who are nurturing a baby, whether breastfed or formula-fed.
I started to brush my daughters teeth when she got her 1st at 6 months. I used the baby oragel infant toothpaste and gum cleaner and came with a little teeth cleaner you slip on your finger. when she started to bit me when she was around 1 I started to use a soft tooth brush, they have a baby one I can't think of the name.
with my son I forgot about brushing his teeth I felt so bad I rarely did it, but the ped. said she didn't recommend brushing teeth till they are one year.
but I use a soft tooth brush and baby tooth paste with him and he is one. I still try the finger tooth brush time to time but he bites and it HURTS!!!!
The nubby wand is good for cleaning and stimulating the gums (great for teething), but it won't clean teeth very well. For baby teeth, I recommend using a toothbrush or a washcloth. For days where your baby won't let you in the mouth, just hand them a toothbrush and let them chew on it (while being supervised, of course).
You don't need toothpaste until your child is much older (can spit out on command, generally between 2-3 years old). If bad breath is an issue, get fluoride free toothpaste. You really want to have your pediatrician's ok before you give fluoride- it can badly damage teeth if you use too much.
