My daughter is 6 months old has has started to refuse the bottle unless it is bedtime. So I decided to try a sippy cup.
Went to the store and there are a million different types!! I wanted one with a rubber mouth peice so that it would feel a little like the bottle. After staring at the wall of cups I finally chose one that promised to be an 'easy transition' cup, and claimed the nipple was rubber.
Get it home, open it up, and it's just a hard plastic spout covered in a thin rubber! She thinks the handles, which are rubbery, are where she should suck!
Does anyone have any advice as to what sippy cup worked best for them? I live in Canada, so though there are a million kinds, it seems there are only a handful of brands available.
Thanks for any input!

Our DD uses Born Free. They have a soft spout (Training Cup) and a hard spout (Drinking Cup). I'm not sure if you have that brand available over there. You might be able to buy them online (though I don't know if they ship to Canada): http://www.newbornfree.com/shop/109527/Info.aspx

I went through about 9 different cups until I found one that worked LOL, we first tried the Avent sippy cups but they leaked and I did not care for them, I ended up with the Nuby kind that kinda looks like a sports bottle shape with a soft tip to drink. I now have transitioned to the playtex insulator kind that have a small hard spout and he loves these. Some of the others the hard spout was huge compared to his mouth and he had a hard time with them. Not sure if any of these are found in Canada but that is what worked for us.

My son is a year and when he was about 6-7 months we started him on the nuby with handles. It has a silcone top soft spout and it's leak proof! Good luck!

This is the BEST sippy cup I have found. My daughter is 6 months and already uses it as a straw cup rather than a sippy (although has a sippy spout as well).

I should preface and say that my sippy isn't a rubber mouth, but I personally find that she prefers it over the born free one we have that she chews on and all the water spills out. She drinks very well out of the straw cup and it doesn't get everywhere.

Well I got her to drink out of the cup I have once....but now it's all uphill again. If anything she gets thirsty enough that she takes the bottle every now and then. I'm just ready to pull out my hair because she isn't getting enough formula!
I think I may try the nuby ones next if I can find them!

Please don't worry overmuch about how much she's drinking as long as she's not losing weight. I have had feeding problems since my daughter was 7 weeks old. She refused to nurse, refused to take a bottle, and she is 22 weeks and still refusing. Last night was the first night I didn't do a night feed. She had been having 6 bottles, and now we're down to 5. Most of the time, I can only get her to drink 3-5 ounces in a feeding. She weighs 15 pounds and drinks about 28 ounces a day. And she's still gaining weight, sleeping at night, and pretty happy (when she's not eating or tired or bored). So, yes, try the sippy, but I will tell you what my doctor told me: she will eat when she is hungry.

Both mine only would start out with the gerber brand called NUK it was great and I was pleased with it.

I'm working on this as well and I bought a few w handles...soft tip blah blah...and she likes the disposable one's..they are throw away one's..but easier for leaks to happen:)

Hi Jolene, the best sippy cups for your baby to transition later to real cups, avoid the dental and orthodontic problems associated with bottles....is one with a straw.

I think my daughter will be ready for a sippy cup in another few weeks. She's started reaching for my cup. I'd like one with a straw, like Franny7 suggested. I went to Babies R Us near me and didn't see one. Any suggestions for a brand? I could buy it online or maybe Traget would carry it.

I've been through so many cups with both of the girls.

Kala's magic cup is one of the best cups I have found. Its a hard spout that doesn't cause dental problems. Unlike straws, it takes very little sucking to get fluids out of. They clean up so easy, are very durable, and do not leak.

The thing I like best about them is that they come in three pieces that can be used individually later on. The valves attach to regular soda/juice/water bottles. When the child outgrows the valve, you can still use the cup as a regular cup- something that a lot of regular sippy cups don't have. They also come in bright solid colors that kids love.

If they don't sell them in stores in your area, you can pick them up on ebay.
