My DD has had a goopy eye since she was about 3-4 weeks. I've mentioned it to the pediatrician at EVERY appointment. I keep getting told it's a clogged tear duct and to massage her tear duct.
It had started in one eye and then for a while it was both eyes. When DD was admitted to the hospital for a UTI when she was 6 weeks the strong IV antibiotics cleared up both eyes, but then about a week out of the hospital one eye came back goopy. She's on low grade antibiotics for hr UTI (will be for about a year or more) and that obviously isn't helping with the eye.
The pediatrician gave us some eye drops to try at one point. The directions said keep the eye shut for 2 minutes. Yeah right.... It was hard enough holding her down to get them in her eye other than then keeping her eye closed for more than 10 seconds. We used them for 2.5 weeks with no noticeable change to her eye.
So we've done drops, warm compresses with tear duct massage, cleaning her eye out with wash cloth, putting breast milk on her eye (read that tip on several websites). Nothing seems to work long term. It will go away for a couple of days and then come back. Some days it will be just a little goopy...other days a lot goopy.
She's now almost 21 weeks...so this has been going on for a long time. Any suggestions? Is this normal?

if it sticks together use a warm compress to separate it (my DD's would get stuck every so often), but otherwise let it run it's course and not use eye drops or warm compresses or tear duct massage. Our optometrist said that if it's clogged it's going to stay clogged and either work itself clear or you'll have to have surgery. My DD's seemed to get worse everytime she was teething, since the surgery we've been in great shape
