Is there a trick to those nose sucking things?

DD sounds somewhat congested. More so when she's laying flat. It sounds like it's right in the very back of her nose/throat area. It's when she's breathing through her nose...and she gets a little wheezy in the throat. Mild cough (occassionally) but it doesn't sound like much and some occassional sneezing.

When I look in her nose I don't see anything. Occassionally a little bit of goo...which I can get with the suctioner to atleast come to the front so I can get it with my pinky finger nail.

But I put the saline drops in....and sunction away and get practically nothing out. Am I doing it wrong? She still will sound all congested and I get her pretty pissed off :-/

I raised the head of her mattress last night and she was still sleeping when I left for work (about 11 hours) so I think that helped with her breathing...and we have the humidifier going.

Yesterday, she spit up a lot too...DH and I think it might be from the mucus running down her throat--thoughts on that?
And, any nose sucking tips?

You know, I haven't had crazy success with saline drops although I know people swear by them. I seemed to always have the same issue as you. Have you tried putting her in the bathroom with the shower running so she can inhale the steam? That helps a lot. My boys tend to have spit up times when they are congested as well. I hope she feels better! I wish my boys would sleep for 11 hours!!

Maybe try suctioning about 10 mins after putting the drops in. I got more out waiting a little while. Also the steam shower helps especially if they are somewhat upright in the tub. It can just drain right out, or try suctioning after that....about 20 mins for steam and I used to incorporate it with bath time.

I think that the store bought bulb syringes are not good. The one that we left the doctor's office with is the best.
I wash and rinse ours out a lot, but did buy a new one hoping for the same results and got little results with those.

I'll try bringing her into the bathroom when I shower tomorrow...I'll see what that loosens.

She was sleeping pretty consistently 11 hours and then in the last couple weeks went back to 9-10....last night she slept 12 (I called and asked DH what time she got up).

I normally do suction right after I get the drops in...I figure she's already screaming, might as well make her more mad before I comfort her....but I'll try to wait and see if I get more out.

I agree with Jessi. We have 6 store bought bulbs and none of them work like the one we brought home from the hospital. I'm tempted to go back to our hospital and ask for another. I don't remember who told me but I was told to ALWAYS use saline before every suction. It keeps your babies nose from getting too dry and irritated which can happen when your sucking all the boogies out. When my LO is sick, the helps but it only seems temporary because a few minutes later, she's all snotty again. It's hard watching our little ones struggle and they can't even blow their own nose or spit it out! I can't wait until my LO can do it herself!

I agree about the bulbs. We have 2 from the hospital--they have longer spouts (for lack of better word)...the other ones don't work for anything.
