He already knew that the mom carries the baby for 9 months and it comes out of the vagina or by c-section. He was asking how the baby got there in the first place. I told him very clinically about sex and how it works.
He kind of made a funny face and said "really?" I wasn't sure that he got it completely, but then a few months later, he found out that a friend of his was going to be a big brother. He asked me if his parents "did that thing with the penis and vagina." I said yes. He definitely gets it.
I'd much rather my child find these things out from me that from his friends. And believe me, kids talk...even at age 7.
From the time they were babies I told them that their penis was a penis. When they got older and asked if girls have a penis I told them no, girls have a urethra for going pee and a vagina that makes us a girls. Basically they stuck with boys have a penis and girls have a vagina. (now that they are older they are less comfortable with the V word!)
When they were in preschool they learned about the birds... literally! they were told birds have eggs which form babies when the daddy plants a seed in the egg. The teacher elaborated that people come from an egg and a seed too. This was enough for them. They told me the facts and had no questions about it.
I am pregnant now and have asked my son how we got the baby. He told me daddy planted a seed in my egg. I asked him if he knows how the baby gets out. He told me they cut it out. I explained that mommy's have a special place for babies to come from which is between legs and seperate from where we poo and pee. I told him that when the time comes I will have pain as my body gets ready for this and asked him if he had any questions, but he didn't.
My son will be 7 in May. I think at this age giving too much information just leads to confusion and giving too little leads to a lack of trust.
My son asked me once what a prostitute was because he heard it on TV and I told him it was a person who takes money from people who want to touch their body in a not good way. Too much information there would have led us down a road we don't need to go down! LOL Each kid is different, so let your son be the lead.
I think your best bet is to try to monitor as many conversations as you can and ask him if he understand what the other kids are talking about. Clarify if you need to, go over good touch vs bad touch, and let him know there are some topics he shouldn't be talking about because he is a kid and kids should talk about kid stuff!
It won't hurt to remind the older siblings that they need to watch what they talk about.... my older son is 12 and knows that there are inappropriate things to discuss around his little brother. I remind my nieces and nephews also. But my 12 year old is just getting to the point where he needs to know stuff and wants to know other stuff. It's okay for kids to be innocent and not know too much.
