I just learned that the new school my children are attending won't let you pass out birthday party invitations. I figure I've got to get cozy with the parents early on if I want to have someone to invite. My daughter is six and my son is 8. Neither they nor my husband and I are socially gifted. In other words, we all have a hard time making friends. I know I must give off a bad impression because only people who are friendly to everybody are friendly to me. I know it can't all be me, too. I know my children have to make friends and exchange numbers...I don't know what do do, though. At least she has girl scouts. Otherwise, gee, I worry they'll end up sitting with a party cap on their heads, and no guests, crying in their cakes. I admit it, I'm freaked out. Any suggestions?

I can definately relate to all of this! What I have started to do is make play date invitations and sending them to the parents. Simple things like meeting at the park or even in your home to bake cookies or have structured games is a great way to help your children interract with others. Also when the parent arrives to pick their child up you will be able to update them and maybe they would be willing to volunteer for the next play date. Also car pooling is a great way to help one another, the environment and get to know people. When you appreciate someones child they will appreciate you. Also you may want to check on line at the meetup groups in your area or may want to consider starting one yourself. I know for a while my son and I would go to public events in our area like story time at the library or at the childrens day they offer here at our nearest Lowe's Hardware Store. Places where you can take your child publically, is also a great place to meet other parents and children :) I hope this helps. Here for you if you need anything :) Good luck!!

Oh I am not good at this! I have done it all play dates, events, and for whatever reason I have never been too cozy with the parents. My kids had fun and thats what it is about! LOL My son kinder class I did bond with a few moms because we pick up at the door so we would chit chat after school. Now my daughter just started kinder and other than 1 mom the others are so UNFRIENDLY! I am like jeeze:( But she can hand out invites thank god so hopefully a few will come. For whatever reason her parties are always a disaster! Hope this year will be different. She seems to still have fun but mommy tends to get her extra gifts..LOL

You in PA by any chance...I just moved here and don't know anyone!

I can't beleive they won't let you pass out invites. What we did at our old school was the parent would come in and place the invite in each childs back pack. If one child is invited they all need to be invited. It was that simple. Maybe you can make that suggestion to the teacher?
