I don't self medicate with alcohol all that much anymore; although, I still do enjoy a couple of beers with a good dinner or a few ounces of quality alcohol before bed every now and then. I have found more constructive ways to deal with my anxiety, but I understand people who use it to help them get through this life. I think that it was a more socially acceptable means to deal with anxiety in the past than admitting that one had anxiety or even exhibited the symptoms of anxiety and panic attacks. That's rather sad when you think about it. It was better to be labeled a drunk than somebody with anxiety and panic attacks, otherwise known back in the day as nervous fits. You have to love how eloquently people used to put things.
My best friend's father had anxiety and panic attacks and dealt with it with alcohol. He didn't die from alcoholism, but it took a toll over the years. My maternal grandfather and paternal great grandfather both died from alcoholism. Truth be told, when I'm feeling anxious, I would rather eat a brownie or smoke a joint rather than take a drink or pop a benzo. Yet, alcohol is the societal approved form of self medication to kill the pain.
