When I was a young mother, a huge storm came over a large area of our state and the possibility of tornadoes were predicted. All I could do back then was watch the sky and listen to the radio. (No smart phones back then!) Within a few hours we were hit with a 60+ mph (we found this out later) wind shear. The metal roof was rumbling loudly. Fearing the trailer would be picked up and we'd die, I wrapped my baby with a blanket and headed for the ditch, which as about 30 ft from our front door. Just before I got to the ditch, the wind picked me up off the ground (only about a foot off the ground) for a distance about 3-4 feet while I was running! I landed on my feet at the edge of the ditch, and slid down and covered both of us with the blanket, as the scary strong winds roared over us. Thank God, it was over in about 3-4 minutes.
From that day forward I panicked every time I heard reports of pending storms. My spouse found it amusing and would egg me on, making my anxiety even worse. I was angry with him and angry with myself. So, I decided to study my Bible (KJV) and prayed and prayed. I began to say aloud (if husband not home) or under my breath that God loves us. I determined to use common sense and do what I could to stay safe and trust that God knows the appointed time that we will die. So, pacing the floor and getting a belly ache sure did nothing to fend off the coming storms. I leaned on God. And lastly, I told my husband to stop provoking me; and said to him why would find it funny to see my scared? I had to do this several times over many months before he finally stopped.
In the last several years we've had 2 tornadoes come with 5 miles of our house, which by the way is a mobile home and there's no safe room. We usually lose power, so I get out the flashlights, candles, matches, and battery-powered radio. I keep telling myself, that God is in control and I will not fear. I stay alert, mind you, but not fearful.
