Now, add in your step-dad and his situation. That would be difficult for anyone to deal with!
It's important for you to remember that you are still in control of your own body and mind, even though you probably feel 100% out of control. You really do have the ability to bring yourself out of the panic. I've been to many doctors for my panic attacks, and they will all tell you to practice deep breathing exercises. When you are in the midst of a panic attack, your body tends to hyperventilate. Take a breath in and hold it for 5 seconds, then let it out. Repeat it several times, and you will notice the panic will start to subside. You may have some residual anxiety, but that's to be expected. When you practice the deep breathing, it will remind you that you are in control of your attacks. Will they still come on? Yes! But you don't have to feel like they control your life.
Panic attacks are very powerful, and, if you allow them to control you in that moment, they will. I would recommend seeking medical advice from a doctor, of course. Don't be afraid to reach out for help. There are so many people out there who experience these debilitating attacks. No one will judge you.
I managed my own panic attacks for over 6 years before they stopped responding to what I was doing to help myself. Sometimes, the things we are dealing with in life take so much of our energy that we just can't fight the attacks as well as we usually could. I went to my psychiatrist for help, and I'm already starting to feel like I'm regaining control again.
Hang in there! I hope you start to feel better soon. Remember, there are people out there who understand exactly what you are going through. I'll be thinking of you and wishing you the best!
