A panic attack is a period of intense fear or discomfort, typically with an abrupt onset and usually lasting no more than thirty minutes. Symptoms include trembling, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, sweating, nausea, dizziness, hyperventilation, and sensations of choking or smothering. Panic attacks can be very sudden, appear to be unprovoked, and are often...
Breathing helps. So does talking, even if it's difficult - it serves as a distraction. Ideally, have someone talk to you about a distracting subject, rather than what you're feeling. If you have a go-to person for help, let them know that when you need help with a panic attack, they should do most of the talking. Maybe have them tell you about a problem they're dealing with. Something where short, sympathetic replies from you would actually make them feel good too.
But above all, rather than fighting it, acknowledge that it is a panic attack and focus on an idea like, "Oh, okay. Let's see how long this one lasts."
Sometimes, panic attacks can be a good thing for me. When there's a buildup of...discomfort/weakness that feels unpleasant, then having a panic attack can be a release of that. A bit like vomiting when you feel ill.
If this is the case for you, maybe focusing on that can help.
Thank you.
