My patients who take gabapentin usually take it to TREAT severe leg cramps. If the doc says this is a normal reaction but it doesn't go away, ask about Lyrica instead? It tends to have less side effects (though still has a significant list!).

i take neurontin for nerve pain...it doesn't help with the leg cramps at all....i also have something weird with my legs...i don't know if i have restless leg syndrome or what...but they kinda flip out on me....usually at night n keeps me from sleeping....they twitch n flop around with out me having any control over them

neurontin is aka gabapentin...
so I read on line that putting a bar of ivory soap between the sheets while you sleep can get rid of these leg cramps... so I tried it on my son....and wow it does work.... weird hu?

I also take Gabapentin and get the restless leg/leg spasms that go along with it so I was prescribed Rivotril drops (Clonazepam) to stop them. It helps but initially the drops made me very sleepy.

Ask your doctors about ropinirole, or requip is the more common name. At even the lowest dosages it stops rls and will make you sleepy so it is used only at bedtime, whatever time that might be for you, hee hee hee. later

thats for restless leg syndrome hon not leg cramps or pain. I forget the name of the antidepressant i was on before lexapro but omg my legs were going a mile a minute...my poor husband was so understanding....if it was him it would have drove me right to the sofa! but for leg cramps i take my pain pill if its really bad or add a tylenol or ibruprofen to my oxy it helps make the oxy work better cant find the word i am looking for...sorry. This may sound crazy and I don't know if it's still available but this worked for me...quinine...it's a drug commonly used to treat malaria. My leg cramps were gone.

laura... did you get the cramps from the neurontin/gabapentin?
did u have side effects from the quinine?

I didn't have any side effects from the quinine. Believe me, I was very surprised when my doctor prescribed it and said it would help. And it did! I haven't taken neurotonin. I DO take Mirapex but that's because of the Reglan I used to take...the side effects of that drug are permanent and they are similar to the symptoms of Parkinson's. I no longer take quinine because the Mirapex controls the cramps as well.

Quinine is used to treat leg cramps. I know when I was pregnant and got a lot of cramps I was told to drink tonic water, as it contains quinine. I believe you can get it in tablet form. I have had some awful leg pains over the last few months but I'm not sure its cramp, it feels different and is in both legs.
