Hi, all! I joined this group back in February 2011, after a bout of diverticulitis turned into an acute pancreatitis attack. I was in the hospital for 17 days then. I had MRIs, xrays, CAT scans galore and blood tests and they could not find any concrete reason for the attack...altho the blood tests and swollen pancreas left no doubt of the attack. It slowly faded away....and have been fine for several months.
I had a GI followup the last week of Sept., and was beginning a new attack of diverticulitis, so my GI put me on the usual treatment for that of Cipro and metronidazole (Flagyl). Within 3 days the diverticulitis was almost gone BUT--the pancreatitis was back and I had another 14 days in the hospital.
It appears that a small percentage of persons react to metronidazole with an acute pancreatic attack...too few to even list in the "side effects" data with the meds. And that I am one of those. I will certainly not be doing that metronidazole ever again! Hopefully that is the sole reason for the attack (which takes a long time to fully leave). Hopefully, also, it will not have set the stage for future attacks.
I mention these details just in case any of you have also experienced attacks after being given that antibiotic...it seems to have been written up in medical journals, but not well-known. Avoiding any attacks is worth it, right!?

This is one heck of a condition to have! Now treating the diverticulitis is harder due to limitations, and I also seem to have developed EKG irregularities that suggest heart problems are coming on. I have a stress test in a couple of weeks. It seems to be the interplay between conditions that gets us, no?
At least we don't have time to be bored!
