Does any one have this type of pancreatitis and possibly know how to deal with the flare up that come and go? my husband had a distal pancreatectomy and numerous ercp and still having random flares that put him in the hospital. He doesnt smoke or drink at all and does his best to eat well 95% of the time. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm sure you've had plenty of tests but is the spchinctor of Odi, have a big enough opening? It's the opening of the head of the pancreas that connects to the bile duct.

I have it and have had it for four years. I only eat one meal a day the rest is liquids to give the pancreas a rest. I have had stents put in and wires and had lithotripsy for stones and all that did was not too much, still pain and flare ups. The specialist put a huge stent in the opening of the pancreatic duct and it was as painful as could be for two weeks. My body then passed the stent. I have no more foreign objects inside me and I am feeling much better. I cannot eat just 'anything.' You will need to test you body for what it will hold and what it rejects and stick to a diet that works for you. Also taking enzymes that cost $16 a tablet and I need to take about 10 a day. Stay away from too much fatty foods and rest and keep stress at bay. Hope this helps.....

I have idiopathic cp...I still get flares and have daily pain but I've found that eating around 20/25 grams of fat a day helps a lot. Also, I gave up eating meat & chicken all together. I now get protein from yogurt, beans, cottage cheese...basically if the food is soft it's easier to digest. I eat small meals and snacks throughout the day and take creon with all meals. 36000 units with meals (double for triple the amount if you go out to eat since you cannot control the fat content) and 12000 units with snacks. If I do treat myself and eat a meal that contains high fat...(like the Christmas dinner meal)...I double my creon, limit fat content before and after the meal. And do not eat anything off my regular diet plan after the splurge meal. For me, if I stray too far from my light meals I'll end up in the hospital or on bedrest/liquids at home. Another tip I received from Columbia Pancreas Center in NYC is to drink more water than a normal person. Apparently people with CP need more hydration that people with a healthy pancreas. So sipping on water all day and night is beneficial. Anyway hope this helps...not on this website much anymore since there are so many facebook support groups for CP. Best of luck.

I also have idiopathic chronic pancreatitis. Something that causes major flares up for me greasy food! I was told to avoid a lot of grease, fat, and sugar anyway. As I am sure you know with chronic pancreatitis, we make comfortable and do not treat. I have been prescribed pain pills but avoid taking them due to other problems. Something that works wonders for me (if no temperature) is a heating pad and scrunching my mid-section up while resting. I hope this helps for the dealing with the flares up. Best wishes.
