I take morphine extended release 3x/day....no problems, but perhaps the pain is the precursor to the attack, and you are staving off the inevitable, maybe not caused by the pain meds...but you take them when the pain increases. You know better than anyone. I have issues with dilaudid, but morphine has worked well so far. Hope you find something that works for you! Keep smilin'

I do not have pancreatitis anymore b/c I had my pancreas removed in May. But....when I did have pancreatitis I had a very hard time b/c I was allergic to almost every pain medication. Finally, I tried Fentanyl. It worked great for me because I had acute attacks. It is very fast acting, but does not stay in your system for a long time. Many people use the Fentanyl patch, but that constantly gives your body a dose of pain medication. I used the Fentanyl lozenges or lolipops that you rub on the inside of your mouth. They are wonderful b/c the body absorbs the medication so quickly and it does not have to go through your stomach. I don't know if this medication would cause you any problems, but it was the answer that I needed at the time. please let me know if you have any other questions. Do be careful with this medication though, b/c it is very potent and strong!

Thanks for the replies. I am lucky in that my pancreatitis is acute and only hits every few months. The pain meds I need are for multiple sclerosis.

Right now we are trying to work on the source of the pain with Valium. I hope it works. So far no luck. I will keep these suggestions on hand to discuss with my neuro when I see him next time. Thanks everyone.

loritab works for me most of the time and when all else fails i take daliude 2mg.but days like yesterday I had to go to the e.r. to get daliude via i.v.in the neck they started out with zofran for nausea and 1 mg. of daliude then an hour later another mg.it works faster and better through the i.v.I hate the e.r. they treat you like a # not a person.Doctors now days are cold hearted.I guess because so many people come in just for drugs when they realy don't need them it makes it worse for those of us that are realy in pain.

sara how are you doing without your pancreas? thats what my dr. wants to do to me.is remove my pancreas.

I have done really well since having my pancreas removed. I had the total pancreatectomy with islet auto transplant. I do take some insulin, but my sugars are very well controlled.
