Some thoughts on painful swelling. I assume that your GP has ruled out another blood clot , mondor's or phlebitis?
My first thought is "shoulder hand syndrome" also known as regional pain syndrome, RSD ( reflex sympathetic dystrophy). It is usually caused by an actual injury to the sympathetics of the area ( a fall, a surgery). The exact mechanism is not known. Sometimes changes in the fingernails, the skin and circulation are seen but not always. (horizontal ridges, irregular growth, peeling, mottled color, flushing, blanching blushing ) It is difficult to treat.
An Occupational or Physical therapist may be able to help you if your doctor will write an evaluation request.
If it is an RSD type issue, some people respond to exercises with wt. bearing joint compression., use of heat/cold contrast modalities etc.. You will need to find someone who knows of this syndrome. It is not that common but not rare either.
The swelling may respond to some type of compression therapy, with wrapping , manual massage and later a compression garment. It could also make it worse, depending on the mechanism of swelling. Extra pressure ( underarmor or sport skin) short stretch bandage Wrapping has also been known to decrease the pain.
Or even wearing a stockinette stretch cotton sleeve to decrease painful touch in the environment may help. This would be a cheap way to trial. You can get cotton tubular stockette at a drug store or durable medical supply store for a few bucks.
I am no doctor, just someone who sees a lot of clinical presentations.
I was just talking with someone today about how hard it is to find good pain medicine people.
You have a lot of issues right now. You will need a lot of support with many people, for a time. You will need brave people who respect you and your pain. I am so glad to have dailystrength, my good doctor,, PA, friends and family. i have several therapists of different kinds that are out there for me whenI need them and I am always on the lookout for supporting folks. I had one doctor who went "rougue" on me, after fifteen years and I dropped him. The next doctor I went to twice, just to make sure he was indeed a nut, the next one....a jerk and then a young MD just out of the Gulf War and he wasn't scared of my pain and we have been a team since. My point...It is hard work to find the gems, even harder when I am hurting and in great need, but they are out there. I hope you can find some help very soon. Godspeed. Good luck.
