I'm sorry for the loss of your husband. I myself do not have acute or chronic pancreatitis buy my 10 yr old daughter has been dealing with chronic pancreatitis and is also type 1 diabetic for 4 years now. Just recently we flew to Boston Childrens hospital and they checked her for any DNA mutations. Results came back positive for the DNA mutation SPINK which makes her at a very high risk of cancer. Trying to look into having a pancreatic transplant so we can eliminate the risk of pancreatic cancer. I've been looking to find someone who has had the same diagnosis but no luck.

Omg iam so so sorry. No child should ever have to suffer in this way. Good luck in your search have you inquired as to how a transplant for this is done? Was the test expensive for the dna marker? I would like to find out more about that for myself

Hi KC54. I am brand new to this. Had pretty bad stomach pain on Thurs, sneezed Fri morning and thought my appendix was bursting. Went to ER later that day and was told acute pancreatitis. Informed to go on bland BRAT diet (bananas, rice, apple sauce, toast) and have done so until now (Sun evening). Not sure what comes next aside from endoscopy. I, too, am sorry for your loss. My father died young (all relative but he was 56 and I am 52 so his age doesn't seem as old as it used to) from pancreatic cancer. It is a horrible and vicious disease. How long has your pancreatitis been going? What have you done? Have you changed your diet? I know virtually nothing about this. The info online varies from eat a vegan diet to eat a primal diet emphasizing lean meat and lots of veggies and limited/no fats. I have no idea what is next. Did your pain subside? Too many questions but I hope you are doing well...

I was diagnosed only a month ago through blood work but had this nagging in my side for close to 5 months before going to the doctor. I have had a HIDA scan an ultra sound and on the 3rd of next month i will be hVing an endoscopy.
I have discomfort everyday snd it has affected my sleep now toi. Iam currently taking pain meds and yes have somewhat altered my diet. Mostly just cut out all the good stuff. Fatty aNd greasy and spicy foods.i hopeyou get feeling better. I also found out recently from my brother that my father hadsuffered from pancreatitis. Hmm isit hereditary?

I had severe pain in my side which started in November 2016. It felt just like the gallbladder attacks I had 14 years ago. But, I had my gallbladder removed 14 years ago, I must be crazy, right? FF to 2 Er visits, with no amount of pain meds helping. Finally saw a GI doctor, who said I had sludge in my bile duct, FINALLY, an answer. We scheduled an ERCP for 12/18/16; a 3 hour procedure under sedation. I woke up on 12/28/16, in the ICU. I had acute pancreatitis and was sedated for 9 days. I have no memory of that. Missed Christmas and my son's college graduation. I remained hospitalized until 1/4/17, Happy New Year alone in the hospital, not. I couldn't eat anything while admitted. I had a feeding tube through my nose, gag, and a catheter bag for the infectious material from the acute pancreatitis. I had to have a certain amount of PT and OT before the would release me to go home. I lost 40 pounds. I got my catheter drainage bag removed 3/1/17. First 5 days was great, next 7 days were spent sleeping, fevers of 102, and chills and sweat episodes. Went back to the doctor, and I now have a secondary infection from the tear in my duodenum. Spent another week in hospital, & a new drainage catheter bag was put in place. I have been home for a week or so, and will have this bag for at least another month. It's been a rough road.

KC54, it's around $6,000. We have BCBS and they are requesting certain documents to justify why we did the test for it to be covered.

Sounds like iam in the very early stages of my pancreatitis because at the moment the pain is all i have. Which is certainly enough to be assured, as a caregiver and having lost a spouse to this dreaded disease i do know what i most likely have in my future.
Although with the exception of my dr. (Friends teacher) these others are saying oh it will go away i have a friend rhats had it for years and beat it.
I also have a significant other that not knowing much about the disease and not wanting to face losing me says i will live for years.
My son being in the medical field and i know although silent on the matter says mom just make a bucket list and do it.
Thanks to whom ever started this sight it gives me a place to be real and not have to hold back how i feel because of not wanting those around me to feel bad.

I am so sorry for your lose. I had short episodes and the pain resolved in a few days. One day the pain was so great that I ended up on the hospital for 2 days. The short version is that I had my gallbladder removed but the pain remained along with elevated enzyme levels. The pain lasted about 7 months from the onset. I saw a pancreatic specialist that ran a series of test and fortunately all were negative. It was hard mentally for a short time because all of the test were run over a period of about 2 months. His conclusion was not to worry about my enzyme levels...he told me that those were probably normal for me and he had over 600 patients that had higher levels and were fine. I was only taking Nexium at the time, and what about my pain that was always there? He prescribed 10 mg dose Nortriptolyn that I took before going to sleep (not sure if I spelled it right). It helped for the chronic pain. It took about 2 weeks and the pain slowly subsided. I was on it for a about 5 months and weaned off of it and fortunately I was fine. I was tested and about a year later and the enzyme levels fell to the high end of the normal range. I hope m,y story gives you some hope and comfort.
