$20 to a Social Security recipient (take me for instance) getting $589 per MONTH is a bag of groceries, 1/4 of an electric bill payment, a bag of clothes at the Good Will, decent ground coffee for a month, a new haircut... BUT ~ Wait a minute ~ That's right WE Soc Sec Recips AREN'T the ones getting the extra twenty bucks though ~ ARE we?

Soc Sec is no longer based on a lifetime of work records... They now only go by your last 10 yrs IF THAT. And YES it has been run INTO the Ground by the BIG Government constantly draining it. And I agree with "the scare tactics" used by big government to make a point in "getting their way" using a threat to our very vulnerable population FIRST to get their WAY!!

I think both Republicans and Democrats should be ashamed of their selves. They act like children! No matter what party you are affiliated with once a President enters office he should be treated respectfully by our people otherwise other countries will not show the US respect. Just disappointed in the childish manner our politicians are behaving it is just embarrassing!

Hi NotDead - yes, I know about that extra $20 being special to SS recipients, because of the limited amount we live on. But as you mentioned, we don't get it, there has been no COLA in SS for a while. Why? I believe they don't count the cost of gasoline or groceries in cost of living increases. Ha! How convenient. Boy, I could tell ya there have been enormous increases.

As I posted above, it seems both the R's and the D's are guilty of using SS as their own private piggy bank. And now that the deficit is so big, where oh where will that money come from to pay back that debt? I have no idea.

I just meant that for working families, is that extra $20/week important enough to harm our economy even more? Seems like nothing but politics to me - on both sides.

The fifth graders would be disciplined if they behaved the way our "leaders", both Dem & Rep are. Too bad the people don't have the right to step in and say "enough is enough". But we, the american people elected them and we are now left to suffer the consequences of their behavior and actions.

I think that $20 IS VERY improtant, Mystic. And any others we can get. Why, because it will be SPENT. And that will grow the economy, creating jobs. I think we need to do away with SS, Welfare, Foodstamps, etc., and rely on each other. Granted, some will not be able to survive, we will help them, but the ones who can work, but refuse to, SHOULD perish. To hell with them, they're just a drain on us decent people anyway. The world is better off without them. How did we get 3rd and 4th generation welfare families. We GAVE it to them. Or at least the Liberals did. It simply will not work.

This may seem harsh, but it's the only way to keep from flushing the whole world down the crapper. Giving someone something for nothing, is JUST PLAIN WRONG. Period. If you can't or won't earn it, you don't deserve it. And this goes for those assholes in congress too. If you feel sorry for some child that doesn't get a hot breakfast, feed him or take him away from his parents & jail THEM, or BOTH, but don't set up a freaking Multi-Million Dollar Meal Benefit that every Tom, Dick, & Harry can abuse, cuz you just KNOW they're going to. How many government programs will it take till they learn... It doesn't work!

theguardian, Well I'm on SS and would really hate to see that go. I put in a lot of money in all my days of working. Social Security is not a freebee. The problem is they took our money from SS and spent it all.

SOME of us that can't work ...That HAVE been invalids OR still are ... NEED our government programs to SURVIVE. And tG if it weren't for my surgeries and my program I would have died IS THAT what you really want - Truly want? You are a kind thoughtful individual.. Perhaps with the heat of the moment YOU said these things...

IMO the politicians are pawns for corporations. The D's have a little more heart than the R's. And whether or not we like we are our brothers keeper. We're all connected. So I do not mind sharing part of my earnings to help those less fortunate than myself. I also don't mind paying taxes for that. i do mind paying taxes to help wars that benefit corporations and the few elite. I have been totally affected by this recession. I was out of a job for 18 months and my salary is half what it was before I lost my job. But as the good Lord said, man does not live by bread alone.

Amazing how we can live in the same country and about half of us root for the corporate structure who wants all our money and convince us to vote against our best interest via big buck advertising; while the other half vote for people who spend too much money but allowsa little bit to circulate in the pockets of the elderly and the needy. Our republic may call our institution the best form of government, but it sure does have lots of room for improvement.

IN 1776 our country was in a DIFFERENT positioning than it is now BUT our forefathers did FORESEE the need for changes. There is a process to amend laws AND to make changes. WE DO NOT live in a country with IRONCLAD policies.

NOW if we could just get Congress to take THIS all seriously & STAY in SESSION long enough to study the SITUATIONS as they ARISE... maybe some SIGNIFICANT CHANGES could be made to UPDATE our government to the PRESENT day!
