Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) Support Group
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) an ongoing pattern of disobedient, hostile, and defiant behavior toward authority figures that goes beyond the bounds of normal childhood behavior. When a child cannot seem to control his anger or frustration, even over what seems to be trivial or simple to others, the child will often react in violent or negative ways to his own...
My son feels the same way, but he's only 8, so he still gets a little excited about school too. The thing that stinks is fighting about getting up in the morning, phone calls home, hearing how terrible it was from teachers or son, fighting about homework, etc. My son also gets so excited about special activities and then loses them because of behavior. It's heartbreaking.
How do you feel about his school? Do they try to work with you?
I get the feeling that my son's school just does not want any problems and can't effectively deal with challenging kids. They are looking for a quick-fix "strategy" or "medication" that will turn kids around in a day, and that is just not realistic with kids who have behavioral issues.
I feel for your son, because what you describe was the experience my son had when he was younger. Eventually, the constant getting in trouble and losing privileges made him feel so bad about himself that it led him to where he is now--refusing to go to school. And the constant phone calls home do not help the parent. Parents who have kids with behavior issues know that their children are having trouble behaving at school. We don't need to hear about it every single day. It is just so deflating.
She says no one likes her and no one want to play with her.
She keeps getting into trouble and I must honestly say I dread picking her up in the afternoon. they never have anything good to say about her. I personally think that she is not behaving like this by choice - I think she acts before realizing what she's doing.
She is at her worst at school - at home we have our moments but not as bad as she would be at school.
I have tried the reward system - no result
I have tried begging - no result
I have tried threatening - no result
I have tried time-out - no result
I have tried screaming - no result
I have tried punishing - no result
I am at a loss of words and ways to help my baby get through this - to be excepted by other and just to see her happy again - she is always so angry and fighting fit.
nothing hurts more than to hear how people cant stand your child - and even with all her problems - she will always be a beautiful little girl.
We as parents try to tell our children how proud we are of them when they behave properly or do something nice - but the outside world only puts them down. They only see the bad. I wish for one day that they would just all stop and really look at that little person inside. Really notice them. Make them feel welcome. but unfortunately they are treated like outsiders.
My daughter is 4, she has been expelled from 3 pre-schools at the age of 3 and now she is in the process again of being cast aside because of her behavior.
P.S. I always tell my son what he is doing well. I find that he needs to hear the positive because he is so overwhelmed with the negative feedback.
Make sure you have an IEP for school (we are dealing with this right now) as it can be for online/home school and any other help that might come from this as well as therapy.. *hugs* .. my son (10) is going through a lot of this as well.
