Hi I'm new to the group & could really use some advice. My son is almost seven & was diagnosed with ADHD & ODD when he was five. His ADHD seems to be pretty well controlled lately but his ODD seems to be getting worse. Every minute of everyday is a constant battle. If we ask him to do anything it turns into a complete meltdown that lasts an hour or more of him throwing, breaking, things, hitting, punching, swearing, calling himself down, hitting himself & distorting anything in site. Yesterday we went for a bike ride & all we asked was for him to move over on the sidewalk so a lady could pass & that was a start of a two hour meltdown which included all of the things mentioned above as well as screaming that we are beating him up cause we wouldn't let him ride his bike anymore. I'm so scared to take him anywhere because of this. People are always staring & judging us when they have no idea & I'm scared someone will take him from us because of this. I just don't know what to do anymore. Please help!

Good LUCK! Ty is 11 and was diagnosed with the combined type as well. He takes vyvanse for adhd and small doses or guafficine for impulsivity. Ty has made great strides, but the odd at 11 is different and it's a whole new ball game now. I can't imagine ty off his meds anymore and would suggest meds for your little guy. His self esteem can be saved yet, I also noted tys self esteem really go up there when school wasn't writing poor report after poor report. And he's able to retain the material in school now too. It's just getting him to actually read for the 20 minutes. Small things I notice is that Ty will set his timer for 12 instead of 20, other times he might just be holding the book in front of him but looking elsewhere. I'm at the point that I don't redirect ty anymore because I must be bullying him. As an educated nurse and been through mental health classes and psychology classes my goal is to help Ty learn how to make right choices. Behaviors I see now can only get worse if they aren't addressed and I fear that he will have trouble with the law when he's older, stronger and smarter.
