My son is now 7 and has Odd and Add. Our therapist and a book that I have read say that we have to practice positive behaviors (the positive opposites of the negative behaviors. For example we have practiced that when I tell him to please stop yelling. He will say okay, "daddy". Our therapist says we have to practice the postive behaviors, so we teach him what to do. Also when he does a positive behavior naturally, we use effective praise. Which means we tell him specifically what he did right, tell him great job, and give him a high five (a kiss or a hug). For smaller kids be very enthusiastic when praising, like a cheer leader. The last intervention is when we give him positive reinforcement when he meets his goal at school on his behavior chart. He gets to earn activities. Now to get to this point was a struggle. For a while he would do negative behavior after negative behavior. So the first thing is to pick your battles, do not power struggle, stay calm, keep a positive look on your face and watch your tone of voice. Once I did this he started to listen to me again and we have made progress. We started last march with a counselor. So I live this heart break every day but he is getting better so I am focused on him continuing to get better. So I will focus on knowing that he will get better.
