I am new... our family doctor has asked me to find a support group and since we live in a small community and when you mention ODD, most people are like what's odd? NO, ODD.

My 7 year old son is tearing our family apart. Just today i have enrolled him into a behavioral school "that teaches academics". I have cried and cried over this little boy. He can be the most loving caring and kind boy, then boom! It changes all in a minute and he almost shuts down and will not tell you what id wrong and why he won't listen or do the things that you ask him to. His aggression is so high that it has suspended him from school on 3 occassions. HE'S in 1ST GRADE!!!! It's sad. We have been to 3 different therapists, special camps and have read books. IT'S NOT WORKING! or am I just not trying hard enough?

No one likes to think of their child anything other than perfect but when the public school system told me today that my son now has the label of being 'emotional Disturbed", I lost it. Sitting in front of 4 teachers, principal and therapist I cried! And crried!! My son has a label of emotional disturbed... that's even hard to type

Hi, Natesmom. I'm so sorry for what you are going through. It is very tough to parent children with ODD. My son too could be sweet and loving one minute and angry and aggressive the next minute. As he got older, I found out that he had Major Depressive Disorder and Anxiety Disorder, and that is what was causing his ODD. Unfortunately, he does have to take medication. I resisted medication for a long time because I do believe in trying natural remedies first (I am vegan, and so is my son), but his case was severe and he had become suicidal. We had a hard time finding the right medication, and I do recall that he became even more violent on some of the medications. Finally, his psychiatrist ordered a genetic test that helps identify which medications are more likely to help a patient, and he was prescribed Wellbutrin based on the genetic test results. It was a godsend for us. In the first couple weeks, he stopped feeling suicidal. After about 2 months, his mood had improved, and he was able to better control his anger. I have mixed feelings about all this. I'm so happy that we found medication to help my son, but I can't help but feel sad and worried for him, knowing that he will probably need medication his entire life.

I have an 11 yo step son with adhd/odd the combined type. He has been doing well the last maybe 2 years on vyvance for adhd and guafficine for impulsivity. Does well in school, but social interactions with siblings is questionable. Usually, aggressive and argumentative behavior towards a step brother who is also 11 and a 4 year old half brother at his mom's house. I hear there are times when he's disrespectful to his step father and I can admit his disrespect and lies about me has me just sort of avoiding him a bit. Ive finally talked his father into getting therapy, it was attempted about 2 years ago but mom dropped the ball. Hoping to see good results, but he's very good at his manipulations and so far a week after the first appointment he's left significant bruising to his step brother and also tried pushing him down the stairs. Needless to say, my 11 yo is terrified of Ty, my step son.
