Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) Support Group
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) an ongoing pattern of disobedient, hostile, and defiant behavior toward authority figures that goes beyond the bounds of normal childhood behavior. When a child cannot seem to control his anger or frustration, even over what seems to be trivial or simple to others, the child will often react in violent or negative ways to his own...

Are there any other mums out there who have experience DV and the child with ODD has witnessed any of it. Apparently that is the cause of my sons ODD. We are now going to do some intensive therapy work with him and he should/could come out normal, with all his aggression disappearing and being better at socializing. Has anybody gone through some sort of similar experience and what has it been like. I have to say that it is a relief to know where my sons ODD comes from, even though we had suspected it, now we are on a new road, hopefully, looking at better times. We are hoping that that are going to be some significant improvements and the best thing is that he will come off all the medications that he is taking. Apparently with the right therapy he won't be needing those.

My son's ODD behavior started showing up at age three...a couple years before he was diagnosed. This is the first time I've heard of a child "aquiring" ODD, because I've always thought of it as a nuerological disorder. There wasn't DV in our home, but rather a very disfunctional atmoshere...I've always heard children with ODD have a really difficult time adjusting to "change". I try to keep life as routine as possible and it definitely has made a difference. When my son began school, he wasn't successful until I began giving him a drug called concerta, which made a huge difference. I also give him a lot of positive reinforcement when it's possible.

Yes, my sons problems started around the time he was one. He would get angry and clear the coffee table. You would pick everything up and tell him no. He would do it again. You would pick everything up and smack his hand. He would do it again. You would pick everything up and remove him from the situation. He would crawl back and clear everything yet again. I did have DV in my home but his father was also the same whay growing up. I also had some severe abdominal pain during the last month of my pregnancy. I had two different diagnoses during that time. One was a pulled ligament in the groin. The other a pinched nerve. While in labor and delivery it was discovered that his heart rate would drop if I laid on my either side or stood up. No one coud explain this. He was also taken away from the home at 18 months old because of his father's drug problem. I was breastfeeding at that time. He was ripped away and not allowed to seperate from me normally or naturally. All of these things are risk factors and unfortunately my son has had to encounter them all. There could be other factors that could be causing the problem. Inquire with your family and see if anyone else has ever had such problems. Any complications during pregnancy? Any event that could have caused the child to have abnormal seperation issues? There is no one thing that causes it. Usually it is a slew of problems combined together. Keep your chin up. I have been battling this thing forever alone. I just recently got my son in behavior management and therapy. It is a long hard process and others are not always supportive.
