I just wanted to add that with our 13 year old son, these actions are only displayed at home.  Any other leaders or teachers have always told us that he is respectful and well behaved.  He doesn't display any of the aggression or disrespect to other adults.  It just seems to happen at home....so I don't know.  Does a child with ODD turn their behaviour off and on, depending their surroundings?

My understanding is that the child has to display the oppositional behaviors in multiple settings, such as home and school in order to get an ODD diagnosis.

I have the same
situation w my
7 year old (undiagnosed) daughter. We have long been mystified by how her behavior can be so great everywhere but home and with everyone but the two of us.

i have been told that the child spends so much energy being good outside the home that they can relax and be themselves at home, they will display who they really are with the people they feel the most comfortable with.

The psychologist who did her psych testing said that it isn't abnormal for kids with ODD to display it in only one setting. Such as home, school, another parents home if there is divorce in the family, etc.

My 8yo son behaves at school and I have never been called into the school for behavioural problems.

This is definitely not the case at home where he feels mosy comfortable to not filter his actions and behaviour. Before being diagnosed a few years ago, I always wondered if he tried to keep himself 'together' at school and then was so exhausted from doing that he couldn't help himself at home.
