I would definitely start with contacting your child's pediatrition to discuss the issue and see if he/she feels seeing a psychologist/therapist would help. It helped me and my husband learn how to deal with and control our son's behavior. I wish we had done it sooner but we were hoping he would outgrow the behavior. Don't wait, if it's ADHD/ODD he will not grow out of it, it will only get worse as he gets older. The pediatrician can give you a referral or you can check with your son's school, they may know a doctor that has already helped a student(s). In the meantime, be as calm as you can when things start getting tense. Good luck!

I agree with rockym's comment to get into your pediatrician ASAP and get a referral to a child psychiatrist/psychologist. MOst of the good ones have a long waiting list. In the meantime, what helps me is tag teaming with my husband. When I cannot handle any more I have to give myself "time out" to cool down and attempt to gain more patience and strength while he steps in. My 7 y/o daughter has ODD and ADHD and maybe even bi-polar, which is not confirmed yet. It is NOT easy for parents and/or caretakers but keep in mind your child cannot help themselves and you are the only ones who can get them the help, whether it be medication, thereapy or both. I started a reward chart for my daughter, which has actually helped us a lot in the mornings when she wont cooperate and get ready for school, etc. She receives a green sticker for minding and not giving us grief, yellow sticker if she didnt mind or gave us a hard time or red if it was a morning from hell. I allow her the opportunity to work back up to green to encourage her in the event it's a red day. At the end of the week if she has all green she gets to draw a prize out of the treasure chest I made, which could be something as simple as a coupon for an ice cream, trip to the park, items you pick up from the dollar stores are always big hits, a mother/daughter time where I devote an entire hour or two just her and I, painting her nails, playing a board game etc. Positive reinforcement and encouragement and rewards seem to work best with a lot of ODD children. I hope this helps and wish you lots of patience and dont ever feel bad if you have to give yourself time out and walk away for a while to calm down. ODD kids feed off your frustration.

Ditto what the first two members said. When you go talk to your pediatrician, have a list of points you want to make. Also, go without your child. My son has an appointment with a psychiatrist next week and I'm working on a list of bullet points and examples of things he does.

My son gets easily annoyed with EVERYTHING, mainly his sister. And it seems to be at the end of the day. He REFUSES to take time to himself, he just sits and whines and screams and cries. I made a whining/crying chart that I hang in the living room. Once that chart has two smiley faces that have been crossed out, he has to go to his room and stay there until he has remained calm for five minutes. I just started this, so it's a big of a work in progress, but I've read that small consequences are better than big ones. Probably because they just obsess and feed off the consequence the longer it is.

Stick with it and don't take "it's a stage". My son is 6 1/2 and I took that for the first 5 1/2 years of his life knowing it wasn't true, but not knowing what else to do since no one would listen.

Thanks for the help. I am still at my witts ends with him, have talked to the ped, shrink and the counselor. I know that this is going to be a long haul. Has anyone tried parenting classes? everything I keep reading about it says that it might help, but I don't want to go through it if it is going to be a waste of my time and money.
It was better before Christmas almost like he knew to be good, then today I tried to get him to help me pick up and do chores and it was a complete meltdown. Normally I would be able to handle it, but today it just got to me to no end. I am still looking for that happy medium between letting him do what he wants to do and doing the chores around the house.
